The Haulage system which \u00a0used to move the clay mine hutches up and down the side of the Avon gorge to the processing plant stopped operating many years ago, however the track system was left in situ and was visible on the walk down to the mine entrance when it was still open as a\u00a0visitor attraction\u00a0until it was closed in 2013.<\/p>\n

Since the closure\u00a0it has gradually got over grown with brambles and nettles to a state now that it is hardly visible when looking down from the meadow walk bridge,\u00a0as you can see from the following pictures<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u00a0 \"\"Above the meadow walk bridge the haulage system\u00a0ends, but in its operating days it would have continued up a\u00a0metal and wood ramp to the processing facilities but, like the rest of the buildings was demolished.<\/p>\n

This too has become heavily overgrown, but this section has been identified as\u00a0 a quick win from a clearance point of view and provide some early interest to walkers and visitors to Birkhill.<\/p>\n

The regeneration of the haulage system will take time and the work will be broken up into a series of mini-projects\u00a0spanning 2017 & 2018 commencing Spring 2017.<\/p>\n

Phase -1 Upper ramp section to the bottom of the bridge<\/p>\n

Phase – 2 Bridge to base of ramp<\/p>\n

Phase – 3 Renovate the communication systems, cable rolllers<\/p>\n

Phase – 4 Staircase renewal to provide access to the Avon Gorge<\/p>\n
